Profile
I have a Bachelor of Arts (History) from St. Francis Xavier University (Antigonish, NS), Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of New Brunswick, and obtained my Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from McMaster University (Hamilton, ON).
I come from a clinical background, primarily working in the public sector, with a sojourn into private medical legal work. I have a breadth of experience working with adults over the age of 19. Prior to coming to UBC, I was the Research, Education, and Practice Coordinator for occupational therapy at Providence Health Care. This enabled me to provide clinical support and mentorship to occupational therapists in a medium-sized health authority.
I believe that occupational therapists can make a significant contribution to the healthcare system through using our expertise to advocate for an equitable service for all clients, and especially those from marginalized populations. I want to inspire students to be confident healthcare leaders who rely on sound evidence, exceptional clinical skills, and effective communication to impose change on our medical model driven system.
I am passionate about sport. I enjoy winter sports including cross-country skiing, alpine skiing and curling. I love playing tennis. I was a competitive distance runner and triathlete. My favourite spectator sport is currently biathlon.
Research
While research will not be my focus in a teaching role, I am curious to explore how pedagogy and approaches to teaching can impact student learning and experience.
Teaching
My focus of teaching is clinical skills. I have observed in my former clinical role that occupational therapy practice is becoming increasingly complex. Clients come into the healthcare system with occupational performance issues that are related to multiple, intersecting components. I hope to be able to set a strong skill base for students to work from as they move through their learning and eventually into clinical practice.
